The number of public EV charging points in the UK has more than doubled in the last two years according to a new white paper.

The research, which was undertaken by Charge UK, found that there are more than 930,000 public, home and work chargers in the UK. With 1.1 million fully electric vehicles in the UK, this equates to almost one charger per electric vehicle.

With the installation of EV charging points exceeding the rate at which electric vehicles enter the market, the UK will have an excess of 300,000 chargers by 2030.

CEO of Charge UK, Vicky Read said: “In little more than a decade, the UK’s charging sector has grown to become a major player in the green economy, providing the infrastructure that more than a million EV drivers rely on today and scaling fast to deliver the charging needed through to 2030 and beyond.”

Read continued: “Convenient and affordable charging for all is key to the UK’s switch to EVs. This new analysis will give current and future EV drivers confidence that the charging infrastructure will be there for them.”

To stay on track for 2030, Charge UK have recommended that the new Government implement a series of measures. These include removing grid, planning and permitting delays that slow down progress and including renewable energy in the RTFO.

In their 2024 manifesto, the group also recommend the government take steps to make charging and owning an EV easier and more affordable. Suggesting the government equalise VAT on charging, encourage lower electricity costs and improve signage.

On top of this, Charge UK have called for more clarification on the Rapid Charging Fund, as well as an acceleration of the Local EV infrastructure fund among other things to maximise private investment.

Read concluded: “Charge UK’s members are committed to this, but we cannot do this without the backing of the new Government, who we call on take the steps needed to remove delivery barriers, help us offer affordable charging and support our investment, as set out in our manifesto.”
